Common Language Description

The CPT® Code 34717 refers to the endovascular repair of the iliac artery that occurs concurrently with the placement of an aorto-iliac artery endograft. This procedure involves the deployment of an iliac branched endograft, which is a specialized device designed to restore blood flow in the iliac artery. The process begins with pre-procedure sizing and device selection to ensure that the endograft is appropriate for the patient's anatomy. The procedure includes all necessary ipsilateral selective iliac artery catheterizations, which are essential for accessing the affected artery. Additionally, it encompasses all associated radiological supervision and interpretation, ensuring that imaging is utilized effectively throughout the procedure. The endograft is extended proximally to the aortic bifurcation and distally into the internal iliac, external iliac, and common femoral arteries. This comprehensive approach allows for the treatment of various conditions, including rupture, aneurysms, pseudoaneurysms, dissections, arteriovenous malformations, penetrating ulcers, and traumatic disruptions. The procedure is performed unilaterally, meaning it is conducted on one side of the body, and it is important to note that this code should be listed separately in addition to the code for the primary procedure when applicable. The endovascular technique employed in this procedure is minimally invasive, utilizing catheters and guidewires to navigate through the vascular system, which can lead to reduced recovery times and lower complication rates compared to traditional open surgical methods.
