Bypass graft, with other than vein; iliofemoral

Common Language Description

An iliofemoral bypass graft is a surgical procedure performed to create a new pathway for blood flow from the iliac artery to the common femoral artery using a synthetic graft rather than a vein. This procedure is indicated when there is a blockage or narrowing in the iliac artery that impedes normal blood flow to the lower extremities. The surgery involves making an incision in the abdomen to access the iliac arteries, which are the large blood vessels that supply blood to the pelvis and legs. The surgeon dissects the iliac arteries free from surrounding tissues to prepare for the graft placement. A tunnel is then created to facilitate the connection between the iliac artery and the femoral artery, which is located in the groin area. A tubular synthetic graft is selected based on the size required for the procedure. The iliac artery is clamped and incised to attach the proximal end of the graft, and the graft is then passed through the tunnel to the femoral artery, where the distal end is sutured. After the graft is secured, the clamps are released, and the surgeon checks for proper blood flow and hemostasis to ensure the success of the bypass graft.
