An exploration of the artery, as described by CPT® Code 35761, involves a surgical procedure where the affected artery is examined without subsequent surgical repair. This procedure may also include the lysis of the artery, which refers to the release of any adhesions or obstructions that may be constricting blood flow. The process begins with an incision made directly over the artery in question, allowing the surgeon to access and visualize the artery clearly. Once the incision is made, the surrounding soft tissue is carefully dissected to expose the artery for inspection. During this exploration, the surgeon looks for any signs of disease or injury that may be affecting the artery's function. If the artery is found to be constricted due to adhesions, these are lysed to relieve the pressure. Additionally, if there is kinking of the artery, the surgeon may need to perform lysis on the surrounding tissue to facilitate the straightening of the artery, thereby improving blood flow. After the exploration and any necessary lysis are completed, the incision is meticulously closed in layers to promote proper healing. It is important to note that this code is specifically used for the exploration of vessels other than the carotid, femoral, or popliteal arteries, which have their own designated codes for similar procedures.
