Introduction of catheter, aorta

Common Language Description

The procedure described by CPT® Code 36200 involves the introduction of a catheter into the aorta, which is a major blood vessel that carries oxygenated blood from the heart to the rest of the body. This procedure typically begins with the insertion of the catheter through an extremity artery, most commonly the femoral artery located in the groin area. To facilitate this, a small incision is made at the chosen insertion site, allowing access to the artery. An introduction sheath is then placed within the artery to provide a pathway for the catheter. Following this, a guidewire is inserted through the sheath, which aids in navigating the catheter through the vascular system. Once the guidewire is in place, it is maneuvered through the femoral and iliac arteries, ultimately reaching the aorta. The catheter can then be advanced up and down the aorta as necessary, and it may be positioned near the openings of the aortic branches, although it does not enter these branches. This procedure is often performed to facilitate the injection of medications or radiopaque contrast media, which are used for diagnostic imaging or therapeutic purposes. The careful manipulation of the catheter and guidewire is crucial for ensuring proper placement and minimizing complications during the procedure.
