The procedure described by CPT® Code 37228 involves the revascularization of a tibial or peroneal artery that has become occluded or narrowed, a condition known as stenosis. This is achieved through an endovascular approach, which can be either open or percutaneous. The primary technique utilized in this procedure is transluminal angioplasty, where a balloon catheter is used to dilate the affected artery. The physician may also employ additional methods such as atherectomy, which involves the removal of plaque from the arterial wall, and/or the placement of a stent to maintain the artery's patency. In an open approach, the skin over the access artery is surgically incised to expose the artery, while in a percutaneous approach, a needle is used to puncture the skin and access the artery without a large incision. The procedure is guided by radiological imaging to ensure accurate placement of devices and to monitor the success of the intervention. The goal of this procedure is to restore blood flow to the lower extremities, alleviating symptoms and preventing complications associated with poor circulation.
