Biopsy of palate, uvula

Common Language Description

The procedure described by CPT® Code 42100 refers to a biopsy of the palate and uvula, which are critical components of the oral cavity. The palate serves as the roof of the mouth and is divided into two distinct parts: the hard palate, which is bony and located at the front, and the soft palate, which is muscular and situated at the back. The uvula, a small, conical structure that hangs from the soft palate, is made up of connective tissue, racemose glands, and some muscular fibers. During this procedure, a thorough examination of the roof of the mouth is conducted to identify any lesions present in the palate or uvula. Once a lesion is located, it is incised to obtain a tissue sample. This sample is then sent to a laboratory for histological evaluation, which is reported separately. This biopsy is essential for diagnosing various conditions affecting the palate and uvula, including infections, inflammatory processes, or neoplastic changes.
