The procedure described by CPT® Code 42600 involves the closure of a salivary fistula, which is defined as an abnormal connection between a salivary gland and the skin or the mucous membrane of the mouth. This condition can arise due to various factors, including postoperative complications following surgeries involving the salivary glands or other neck procedures, injuries to the salivary glands, or other underlying medical conditions. During the procedure, the physician will expose the fistulous tract, which is the channel formed by the abnormal connection. The area is then thoroughly irrigated to cleanse it, and any necrotic or unhealthy tissue is debrided to promote healing. Following this preparatory phase, the physician will proceed to close both the proximal and distal ends of the fistula using sutures or, in some cases, a tissue flap. This closure aims to restore normal anatomy and function, preventing further complications associated with the fistula.
