Common Language Description

Esophagoscopy, rigid, transoral, with balloon dilation (CPT® Code 43195) is a medical procedure that involves the use of a rigid endoscope to visualize the esophagus while simultaneously performing a dilation procedure. This technique is specifically designed to address strictures, which are areas of narrowing within the esophagus that can impede the passage of food and liquids. The procedure is particularly useful for treating strictures that may arise from various conditions, including reflux esophagitis, which leads to inflammation and scarring of the esophageal lining; Schatzki's ring, a benign fibrous tissue formation in the distal esophagus; congenital esophageal atresia, a birth defect affecting the esophagus; or malignant diseases that may cause narrowing. During the procedure, the endoscope is inserted through the mouth and carefully advanced into the esophagus until it reaches the stricture. A balloon catheter is then introduced through the endoscope's instrument channel and positioned at the stricture site. The balloon is inflated to a diameter of less than 30 mm, using a pressure gauge to monitor the inflation level, which helps to ensure that the dilation is effective without causing injury to the esophageal tissue. After maintaining the inflation for a brief period, typically between 30 seconds to two minutes, the balloon is deflated and removed. The physician then inspects the dilated area through the endoscope to confirm the success of the dilation and to check for any potential complications or injuries resulting from the procedure.
