Common Language Description

The procedure described by CPT® Code 47382 involves the ablation of one or more liver tumors using a percutaneous approach with radiofrequency energy. This minimally invasive technique is guided by imaging modalities such as ultrasound, computed tomography (CT), or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to ensure precise targeting of the tumor. The process begins with the creation of a small stab incision in the upper abdomen, which allows for the insertion of a specialized radiofrequency thermal ablation device. A radiofrequency electrode needle is then carefully advanced through this incision and into the liver, specifically positioned at the center of the tumor. The application of radiofrequency energy heats the tumor to a predetermined temperature, which is maintained for a specified duration to effectively destroy the tumor cells. Throughout the procedure, the site is monitored to confirm that the entire tumor, along with a margin of surrounding healthy tissue, is adequately treated. If necessary, the electrode needle can be repositioned to ensure complete necrosis of the tumor. This technique may be repeated for multiple tumors, and once the ablation is completed, the stab incision is meticulously closed in layers to promote proper healing.
