Abdominal paracentesis (diagnostic or therapeutic); with imaging guidance

Common Language Description

An abdominal paracentesis is a medical procedure that involves the removal of fluid from the abdominal cavity. This procedure can serve two primary purposes: diagnostic and therapeutic. In a diagnostic context, it is utilized to ascertain the underlying cause of fluid accumulation, which may be indicative of various medical conditions. Conversely, when the fluid buildup leads to discomfort, pain, or respiratory difficulties, the procedure is performed therapeutically to alleviate these symptoms. The process begins with the cleansing of the skin at the designated puncture site, followed by the administration of a local anesthetic to minimize discomfort. A specialized paracentesis needle, which is connected to a syringe, is then carefully inserted into the abdominal cavity. Imaging guidance, such as ultrasound or fluoroscopy, may be employed to enhance the accuracy of the needle placement. Once the needle is in position, fluid is aspirated from the cavity. The aspirated fluid is then visually inspected for signs of bleeding or other pathological conditions. In cases where the procedure is conducted for diagnostic reasons, only a small volume of fluid is extracted for laboratory analysis. However, if the procedure is therapeutic, the aspiration continues until the maximum possible amount of fluid is removed. It is important to note that CPT® Code 49083 is specifically designated for abdominal paracentesis performed with imaging guidance, while CPT® Code 49082 is applicable when the procedure is conducted without such guidance.
