The procedure described by CPT® Code 51702 involves the insertion of a temporary indwelling bladder catheter, commonly known as a Foley catheter. This procedure is typically performed to facilitate the drainage of urine from the bladder for various medical reasons. The term "indwelling" indicates that the catheter is designed to remain in place for a period of time, allowing for continuous urine drainage. The process begins with the preparation of a catheter kit, which includes all necessary sterile equipment. Prior to insertion, the urethra is thoroughly cleansed with an antiseptic solution to minimize the risk of infection. A sterile Foley catheter is then carefully inserted through the urethra and into the bladder. To secure the catheter in place, a balloon at the catheter's tip is inflated with approximately 10 cc of water. This inflation prevents the catheter from slipping out of the bladder. The catheter is subsequently connected to a sterile drainage bag, enabling the continuous collection of urine. It is important to note that CPT® Code 51702 is specifically designated for simple catheterization procedures, while CPT® Code 51703 should be used for more complex cases involving altered anatomy or complications such as a fractured catheter or balloon.
