Common Language Description

CPT® Code 52332 refers to a specific medical procedure known as cystourethroscopy with the insertion of an indwelling ureteral stent, which may be of the Gibbons or double-J type. This procedure involves the use of a cystoscope, a specialized instrument that allows for direct visualization of the bladder and urethra. The process begins with the cleansing of the urethra using an antiseptic solution to minimize the risk of infection. A rigid or flexible cystoscope is then carefully introduced through the urethra and into the bladder. To enhance visibility during the procedure, sterile saline may be instilled into the bladder, which helps to expand the bladder and provides a clearer view of the bladder wall. Once the bladder is adequately visualized, the next step involves catheterizing the ureter, which is the duct that carries urine from the kidney to the bladder. A guidewire is then introduced through the cystoscope and advanced into the ureter, extending all the way to the renal pelvis, which is the area where urine collects in the kidney before it moves to the ureter. Following the placement of the guidewire, a ureteral stent is advanced through the cystoscope over the guidewire and positioned within the ureter. This stent serves to keep the ureter open, allowing for the proper flow of urine. After the stent is in place, the guidewire is removed, leaving the stent securely positioned. The procedure concludes with a re-inspection of the bladder to ensure that the distal tail of the stent is correctly positioned within the bladder before the cystoscope is finally removed. This procedure is typically performed to relieve obstructions in the ureter or to facilitate the passage of urine from the kidney to the bladder.
