Perineal urinary extravasation is a medical condition characterized by the leakage of urine into the perineal tissue due to a disruption in the continuity of the perineal urethra. This condition can lead to significant complications, as the surrounding tissue becomes inflamed, red, tender, and edematous. The disruption of the urethra may occur as a result of various factors, including a stricture at the distal end of the urethra or traumatic injuries that compromise the integrity of the urethral structure. Before any surgical repair of the urethra can be undertaken, it is essential to address the extravasation by draining the accumulated urine from the perineal area. The procedure described by CPT® Code 53080 refers to the uncomplicated drainage of perineal urinary extravasation, which is performed through multiple incisions in the superficial perineal tissue. This approach allows for effective drainage of urine without the need for more invasive techniques. In contrast, CPT® Code 53085 pertains to complicated drainage procedures that may be necessary in cases involving traumatic injuries or when deeper tissue dissection is required to facilitate proper drainage.
