Hypospadias is a congenital condition characterized by the abnormal positioning of the urethral meatus, which is the external opening of the urethra. In males, this opening is typically located at the tip of the penis; however, in hypospadias, it is found on the underside of the penis. The severity of hypospadias can vary, with distal hypospadias being classified as mild. In this case, the meatal opening is small and situated near the glans, or head, of the penis. The procedure described by CPT® Code 54322 involves a one-stage surgical repair of distal hypospadias, which may include the presence of chordee (a curvature of the penis) or circumcision. The surgical technique utilized in this procedure is known as simple meatal advancement, which can be performed using methods such as the MAGPI (meatal advancement and glanuloplasty), inverted Y-meatoglanuloplasty, or V-flap techniques. These methods aim to reposition the urethral opening to its normal location while ensuring the structural integrity and appearance of the penis are preserved. The surgical approach is designed to be minimally invasive, allowing for effective correction of the condition in a single operative session.
