The procedure described by CPT® Code 55040 involves the excision of a hydrocele, which is a surgical intervention aimed at removing a fluid-filled sac that forms around the testis. This condition, known as hydrocele, occurs when there is an accumulation of serous fluid between the two layers of the tunica vaginalis, which is the protective sheath surrounding the testis and epididymis. The tunica vaginalis consists of an outer parietal layer and an inner visceral layer. During the procedure, the physician first examines the scrotum to identify the precise location of the fluid collection. An incision is then made, typically in the groin area for pediatric patients or directly in the scrotum for adult patients. Following the incision, the parietal layer of the tunica vaginalis is carefully incised to allow for the drainage of the accumulated fluid. To prevent the recurrence of the hydrocele, the wall of the hydrocele sac may be closed or partially excised. Finally, the overlying tissues are meticulously closed in layers to ensure proper healing. It is important to note that CPT® Code 55040 is specifically designated for unilateral hydrocele procedures, while CPT® Code 55041 is used for bilateral hydrocele excisions.
