A scrotal exploration is a surgical procedure that involves the examination of the scrotum and its contents, primarily the testis or testes. This procedure is typically indicated following an injury to the scrotal area, when acute symptoms suggest the presence of testicular pathology, or as part of a comprehensive evaluation for male infertility. During the procedure, the surgeon makes an incision in the scrotal skin, which can be done either transversely over the affected hemiscrotum or vertically along the median raphe. This incision allows access to the underlying structures, including the dartos fascia and the tunica vaginalis. Once the scrotum is opened, the testis or testes are carefully delivered out of the scrotum for thorough examination. Any abnormalities found during this exploration are noted for further assessment or treatment. After the examination is complete, the incision is meticulously closed in layers, starting with the dartos fascia and followed by the closure of the skin, ensuring proper healing and minimizing complications.
