The procedure described by CPT® Code 56440 refers to the surgical technique known as marsupialization of a Bartholin's gland cyst. Bartholin's glands are two small glands located bilaterally at the posterior introitus, which is the opening of the vagina. These glands play a role in lubrication by secreting fluid into the vestibule through their ducts. When a Bartholin's gland becomes obstructed, it can lead to the formation of a cyst, which may cause discomfort or pain. The marsupialization procedure involves creating an opening in the cyst to allow for drainage and to prevent future recurrence. During the procedure, the physician carefully grasps the cyst wall with hemostats, makes a vertical incision to drain the cyst, and then sutures the cyst wall to the surrounding vestibular mucosa to maintain the opening. This technique not only alleviates symptoms but also addresses the underlying issue of cyst formation.
