An enterocele repair is a surgical procedure aimed at correcting a specific type of pelvic organ prolapse known as an enterocele. An enterocele occurs when a portion of the small intestine, along with the peritoneal sac, herniates into the rectovaginal space, which is the area between the back wall of the vagina and the front wall of the rectum. This condition can lead to various symptoms, including pelvic pressure, discomfort, and issues with bowel function. The procedure described by CPT® Code 57268 is performed through a vaginal approach, which is considered a separate procedure from other surgical methods, such as abdominal approaches. During the repair, the surgeon makes an incision in the posterior vaginal mucosa to access the enterocele sac. The procedure involves careful dissection of the surrounding tissues to expose the sac, which is then incised to allow the small bowel to be repositioned back into the abdominal cavity. The enterocele sac is subsequently closed with sutures, and additional sutures are placed to reinforce the repair and minimize the risk of recurrence. This meticulous approach aims to restore normal anatomy and function while addressing the complications associated with an enterocele.
