Common Language Description

A lumbar spinal puncture, also known as a spinal tap, is a medical procedure that involves the insertion of a needle into the lumbar region of the spine to access the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) surrounding the spinal cord. This procedure is performed under fluoroscopic or CT guidance to enhance accuracy and safety. The primary purpose of a diagnostic lumbar puncture, as indicated by CPT® Code 62328, is to collect CSF samples for laboratory analysis. This analysis can help diagnose various medical conditions, including infections such as meningitis, the presence of malignant neoplasms, or bleeding conditions like subarachnoid hemorrhage. Additionally, it is utilized in the evaluation of neurological disorders such as multiple sclerosis and Guillain-Barre syndrome. The procedure begins with the disinfection of the skin over the lumbar spine, followed by the administration of a local anesthetic to minimize discomfort. A specialized lumbar puncture needle is then carefully inserted into the spinal canal under imaging guidance, allowing for the collection of CSF specimens. These specimens are subsequently sent to a laboratory for further evaluation, which is essential for accurate diagnosis and treatment planning.
