Common Language Description

Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) is a therapeutic modality utilized to alleviate pain by blocking the transmission of pain signals to the brain. The procedure involves the application of a surface neurostimulator, commonly referred to as a TENS unit, which comprises a generator, a battery, and electrodes. The generator is designed to deliver electrical stimuli that interfere with the pain impulse pathways. Key parameters of the TENS unit, including amplitude, pulse width, and pulse rate, are meticulously programmed and adjusted to optimize pain management for the patient. Amplitude refers to the strength of the electrical stimulus, pulse width indicates the duration of each stimulus, and pulse rate denotes the frequency at which the stimuli are delivered. Electrodes are strategically placed on the skin over the areas experiencing pain, over cutaneous nerves, or at specific trigger points, depending on which location yields the most effective pain relief. Patients receive a comprehensive treatment plan that outlines the usage of the TENS unit, ensuring they are well-informed on how to operate the device for maximum benefit.
