Common Language Description

The procedure described by CPT® Code 64834 involves the surgical suture of a single common sensory nerve located in either the hand or foot. This type of nerve repair is critical in restoring function and sensation following nerve injury. The term "suture" refers to the method of stitching the nerve ends together to facilitate healing and reconnection of nerve fibers. The procedure can be performed using various techniques depending on the location and extent of the nerve injury. For injuries that are more distal, an epineural closure technique is typically employed, where the outer layer of the nerve, known as the epineurium, is sutured to bring the two ends of the nerve together without applying tension. In contrast, for more proximal injuries, a perineural closure technique may be utilized, which involves suturing the individual fascicles of axons within the nerve. This method allows for a more precise alignment of the nerve fibers, which is essential for restoring proper nerve function. The procedure is vital for patients who have experienced nerve transection, as it aims to restore sensory function and prevent complications associated with nerve damage.
