Official Description

Removal of vitreous, anterior approach (open sky technique or limbal incision); subtotal removal with mechanical vitrectomy

Common Language Description

The procedure described by CPT® Code 67010 involves the removal of the vitreous humor from the eye using an anterior approach, which can be performed through either an open sky technique or a limbal incision. The vitreous humor is a clear, gel-like substance that occupies the posterior chamber of the eye, playing a crucial role in maintaining the shape of the eyeball and providing support to the retina. In the open sky technique, a direct incision is made in the cornea, allowing access to the vitreous. Alternatively, the limbal incision is made at the limbus, the junction where the cornea meets the sclera, providing another pathway for the procedure. The removal of the vitreous is a complex process that typically involves three main components: the cutting of vitreous strands, suction to remove the dislodged vitreous material, and the infusion of saline to maintain intraocular pressure and provide a clear view during the procedure. Unlike CPT® Code 67005, which involves partial removal of the vitreous using a needle or scissors, CPT® Code 67010 specifies the use of mechanical devices, such as rotoextractors or VISC devices, to achieve subtotal removal of the vitreous. This procedure may also necessitate the severing of membranes and adhesions to facilitate the effective removal of the vitreous, ensuring that the underlying structures of the eye are preserved and any potential complications are minimized.
