Common Language Description

The procedure described by CPT® Code 67314 pertains to strabismus surgery, specifically focusing on the recession or resection of one vertical muscle, excluding the superior oblique muscle. Strabismus, commonly known as crossed eyes or wall eyes, occurs when the eyes do not properly align with each other when looking at an object. This misalignment can result from an imbalance in the strength of the extraocular muscles, which are responsible for controlling eye movement. The eye has six extraocular muscles, and when one muscle is excessively strong, it can lead to the eye turning inwards, outwards, or misaligning vertically. Conversely, if a muscle is too weak, it can also contribute to misalignment. In the context of this procedure, a recession is performed on the muscle that is too strong, which involves detaching the muscle from its original position on the eye and reattaching it further back, thereby reducing its strength relative to the opposing muscle. Alternatively, a resection may be performed on a muscle that is too weak, which entails removing a portion of the muscle to strengthen it and improve alignment. The surgical approach typically involves making a small incision in the conjunctiva, the clear membrane covering the white part of the eye, to access the extraocular muscle. The muscle is then detached from the globe, repositioned, and secured with sutures before closing the incision. This procedure aims to restore proper alignment of the eyes, thereby improving visual function and aesthetic appearance.
