Common Language Description

The CPT® Code 67808 refers to the excision of one or more chalazia, specifically when the procedure is performed under general anesthesia and/or requires hospitalization. A chalazion is defined as an inflammatory lesion that occurs on the eyelid, resulting from the obstruction of a sebaceous gland. These lesions can vary in depth; they may be classified as superficial or deep based on the specific gland that is blocked. Superficial chalazia can typically be excised using local anesthesia, while deeper chalazia often necessitate hospitalization and the use of general anesthesia due to their complexity and the potential for complications. During the procedure, a vertical incision is made on the palpebral conjunctival surface, allowing the physician to access the chalazion. The removal of the chalazion can be accomplished through curettage, which involves scraping the lesion out, or by carefully dissecting it from the surrounding tissue. In cases where a deep chalazion involves a meibomian gland, the physician may need to cauterize or excise the gland itself. If the chalazion extends to the skin, an incision may be made directly on the eyelid's skin rather than through the conjunctiva. It is important to note that for chalazia excised under local anesthesia without the need for hospitalization, different CPT codes are applicable, such as 67800 for a single chalazion, 67801 for multiple chalazia on the same eyelid, and 67805 for multiple chalazia affecting both eyelids. The use of CPT® Code 67808 is specifically reserved for cases where general anesthesia and/or hospitalization is required for the excision of one or more chalazia.
