Trichiasis is a condition affecting the eyelids, characterized by the abnormal inward growth of eyelashes towards the eyeball, which can lead to irritation and discomfort of the eye. The severity of trichiasis can vary, with some individuals experiencing misdirected lashes on only a portion of the eyelid, while others may have the entire eyelid affected. The treatment approach for trichiasis is determined by the extent of the condition. For localized trichiasis, where only a segment of the eyelid is involved, procedures such as epilation, which involves the removal of individual eyelashes, may be sufficient. However, when a larger area of the eyelid is affected, more invasive procedures are necessary. The CPT® Code 67830 specifically refers to the surgical correction of trichiasis through an incision of the lid margin. This procedure involves making a strategic incision to release any scar tissue that may have developed and to redirect the misdirected lashes away from the globe of the eye. The incision is intentionally left open to heal by secondary intention, allowing for natural healing processes to occur. This method is crucial for alleviating the symptoms associated with trichiasis and preventing further irritation to the eye.
