Conjunctivoplasty; with conjunctival graft or extensive rearrangement

Common Language Description

Conjunctivoplasty is a surgical procedure aimed at addressing various conditions affecting the conjunctiva, which is the thin, transparent membrane covering the white part of the eye and the inner surface of the eyelids. This procedure is particularly indicated for issues such as redundant conjunctiva, which refers to excess tissue that may cause discomfort or visual obstruction, lesions of the conjunctiva that may be benign or malignant, and hyperemia, characterized by the dilation of conjunctival blood vessels leading to redness and irritation. During conjunctivoplasty, a subconjunctival injection may be administered to elevate the conjunctiva away from the underlying sclera, facilitating better access to the affected area. The surgical approach involves excising the redundant or abnormal conjunctival tissue, followed by either extensive rearrangement of the remaining conjunctiva or the application of a conjunctival graft harvested from the contralateral eye. In cases where rearrangement is performed, one or more conjunctival flaps are meticulously configured, raised, and repositioned over the sclera, and these flaps are secured in place using sutures or tissue adhesive. Alternatively, if a graft is utilized, the procedure includes careful harvesting of conjunctival tissue from the donor site, which is typically marked and prepared with local anesthesia, ensuring minimal discomfort for the patient. The graft is then precisely placed over the defect created during the procedure, promoting healing and restoration of the conjunctival surface.
