Dacryocystorhinostomy is a surgical procedure aimed at alleviating epiphora, which is characterized by excessive tearing due to an obstruction in the lacrimal passages. This blockage can prevent tears from draining properly, leading to discomfort and potential complications. The procedure involves creating a direct connection between the lacrimal sac and the nasal cavity, effectively bypassing the obstructed pathways. During the operation, a fiberoptic light probe is utilized to navigate through the tear duct system, allowing the surgeon to visualize the lacrimal sac and the surrounding anatomy. The surgical approach includes excising a small circle of nasal mucosa to access the underlying bone, which is then drilled away to facilitate the opening of the lacrimal sac. To maintain this newly created passage, metal stents attached to Silastic tubing are inserted, ensuring that tears can flow from the lacrimal sac into the nasal cavity. This procedure is critical for restoring normal tear drainage and improving the quality of life for patients suffering from chronic tearing issues.
