This procedure is typically performed by a physician to address exostoses, which are bony growths that can develop in the EAC, leading to a gradual narrowing of the canal due to the deposition of bone on the canal wall. The process begins with an otoscopic examination, where the physician inspects the EAC to identify the presence of exostoses. Following this examination, an operating head is attached to the otoscope, allowing for the introduction of surgical instruments through the speculum. The area is then cleansed with a disinfectant to minimize the risk of infection. A medially based canal skin flap is created and reflected onto the tympanic membrane, providing access to the underlying structures. The exostoses are meticulously drilled away using specialized tools such as bone curettes and diamond burrs. After the excision, the surgical site is covered with the previously created skin flap and subsequently closed.
