Common Language Description

The procedure described by CPT® Code 69220 refers to the debridement of a mastoidectomy cavity, specifically categorized as a simple or routine cleaning. This procedure is often necessary following a mastoidectomy, which is a surgical operation to remove infected air cells from the mastoid bone located behind the ear. The primary goal of this debridement is to maintain the mastoid cavity in a clean state, free from debris, and to address any persistent infection or drainage that may occur in the area. During the procedure, a physician utilizes a mirror or a rigid endoscope to visualize the cavity effectively. This visualization is crucial for ensuring that all debris is adequately identified and removed. The process typically involves flushing the cavity with a diluted hydrogen peroxide solution, which helps to loosen any accumulated debris. The physician then employs forceps or a curette in one hand while using a suction device in the other to meticulously remove the debris from the cavity. Additionally, the middle ear is cleaned as it can often be a source of infection. After the debridement is completed, the cavity is inspected to ensure thorough cleaning, and any residual hydrogen peroxide is suctioned out. To promote healing and prevent further infection, the surface of the mastoid cavity is treated with boric acid and/or anti-fungal or anti-bacterial agents. It is important to note that CPT® Code 69220 is designated for simple or routine cleanings, while CPT® Code 69222 is reserved for more complex procedures that may involve anesthesia or other non-routine cleaning requirements.
