Common Language Description

Balloon dilation of the Eustachian tube(s) is a surgical procedure performed endoscopically through the nasal passage. This technique utilizes a balloon catheter that is inserted into the Eustachian tube(s) to expand and stretch them. The primary purpose of this procedure is to enhance the patency of the Eustachian tubes, which can become obstructed due to chronic ear congestion often resulting from middle ear or mastoid infections. The Eustachian tube serves a critical function by connecting the middle ear to the nasopharynx, allowing for the equalization of pressure and ventilation of the ear during activities such as swallowing or yawning. During the procedure, a saline-filled balloon catheter is carefully introduced into the Eustachian tube using an endoscope that is designed to navigate through the nasal cavity. Once the balloon is correctly positioned within the tube, pressure is applied and maintained for several minutes to ensure that the tube remains open. After the dilation process is complete, the balloon is deflated and removed, followed by the withdrawal of the endoscope and catheter. This procedure is typically conducted under general anesthesia to ensure patient comfort and safety. For coding purposes, CPT® Code 69705 is used for the dilation of a single tube, while CPT® Code 69706 is designated for the balloon dilation of both tubes.
