Common Language Description

A radiologic examination of the cervical spine, designated by CPT® Code 72052, involves the use of X-ray technology to capture detailed images of the cervical vertebrae and surrounding structures. This procedure typically includes six or more distinct views, which may encompass anteroposterior (AP) and lateral projections, among others. The X-ray process utilizes indirect ionizing radiation to create images that reveal the internal anatomy of the body. The principle behind X-ray imaging is based on the varying densities and compositions of human tissues; as X-rays pass through the body, some rays are absorbed by denser materials, while others penetrate less dense areas. This differential absorption allows for the formation of a two-dimensional (2D) image on a detector positioned behind the patient. It is important to note that if fewer than six views are taken, different CPT codes are applicable: for three or fewer views, CPT® Code 72040 should be reported, and for four or five views, CPT® Code 72050 is appropriate. Therefore, CPT® Code 72052 is specifically reserved for comprehensive cervical spine examinations that require six or more views to ensure a thorough assessment of the cervical region.
