Common Language Description

A radiologic examination, specifically CPT® Code 73521, involves the imaging of both the left and right hips, and may also include the pelvis when performed. This procedure utilizes X-ray technology, which employs indirect ionizing radiation to create images of the internal structures of the body. The principle behind X-ray imaging is based on the varying densities and compositions of human tissues, which allows certain X-rays to be absorbed while others pass through. This differential absorption results in a two-dimensional representation of the anatomical structures being examined. The primary purpose of this examination is to identify various conditions affecting the hips, such as fractures, dislocations, deformities, degenerative bone diseases, osteomyelitis, arthritis, foreign bodies, infections, or tumors. The standard views typically captured during this examination include the anteroposterior view, which is taken with the patient lying supine and the legs straight, slightly rotated inward. Another common view is the lateral 'frog-leg' view, where the hips are flexed and abducted, with the knees bent and the soles of the feet together. Additionally, a cross-table view may be performed, positioning the unaffected hip and knee at a 90-degree angle to allow the X-ray beam to be directed perpendicularly to the long axis of the femur on the affected side. An alternative lateral view can also be taken with the hip flexed and abducted at 45 degrees, with the beam aimed perpendicular to the examination table. The pelvic view, often included in this examination, is typically performed with the patient supine and both legs rotated inward approximately 15 degrees. For coding purposes, CPT® Code 73521 is specifically designated for an X-ray examination of both hips consisting of two projections, while additional codes exist for more extensive examinations with additional views.
