Common Language Description

A radiologic examination of the abdomen, designated by CPT® Code 74000, involves the use of X-ray technology to create images of the internal structures of the abdomen. This procedure captures a single anteroposterior (AP) view, which means that the X-ray beam passes from the front of the body to the back. The examination focuses on visualizing various components within the abdominal cavity, including internal organs, soft tissues such as muscle and fat, and the supporting skeletal structure. The principle behind X-ray imaging is based on the varying densities and compositions of human tissues, which affect how X-rays are absorbed or transmitted. As a result, some X-rays are absorbed by denser materials, while others pass through less dense areas, allowing for the creation of a two-dimensional image on a detector positioned behind the patient. The resulting radiographs are instrumental in assessing the size, shape, and position of abdominal organs, as well as identifying patterns of air, which can indicate bowel gas, obstructions, foreign objects, and calcifications in critical areas such as the gallbladder, urinary tract, and aorta. This examination is often ordered to investigate symptoms such as abdominal distention, pain, vomiting, diarrhea, or constipation, and can also be utilized in cases of traumatic injury. Additionally, it may serve as a preliminary screening exam or scout film prior to more advanced imaging procedures. The CPT® Code 74000 specifically applies to the single AP view of the abdomen, which can be performed with the patient either lying flat (supine) or standing erect, providing flexibility in positioning based on clinical needs.
