Common Language Description

A radiologic examination of the colon, identified by CPT® Code 74270, is a diagnostic imaging procedure that utilizes X-ray technology to visualize the internal structures of the colon, including the right ascending, transverse, left descending, and sigmoid colon, as well as the rectum. This examination may also capture images of the appendix and a portion of the distal small intestine. The process involves the use of indirect ionizing radiation, which allows for the differentiation of various tissues based on their density and composition. As X-rays pass through the body, some are absorbed by denser materials, while others are transmitted, creating a two-dimensional image on a detector positioned behind the patient. The primary purpose of this examination is to diagnose a range of gastrointestinal conditions, including tumors, inflammatory bowel diseases such as Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis, irritable bowel syndrome, obstructions, and abnormal anatomical configurations, including conditions like Hirschsprung's disease in pediatric patients. Patients undergoing this procedure may present with various symptoms, including weight loss, blood in the stool, abdominal pain, and changes in bowel habits, such as diarrhea or constipation. The examination typically begins with one or more scout films taken in anteroposterior (AP) view, either in an erect or supine position, to visualize surrounding organs such as the kidneys, ureters, and bladder, as well as the colon itself. For the single-contrast study indicated by CPT® Code 74270, a small tube is inserted into the rectum, and a high-density barium contrast material is instilled using gravity. The patient may be repositioned to ensure the barium adequately coats the lining of the large intestine. This technique enhances the visibility of the colon during the imaging process, allowing for a thorough evaluation of its structure and function.
