Common Language Description

Ultrasound, commonly known as sonography or echography, is a non-invasive imaging modality that employs high-frequency sound waves to visualize and assess various tissues and structures within the body. Specifically, CPT® Code 76882 pertains to a limited ultrasound examination focused on nonvascular structures of the extremities. This includes the evaluation of periarticular soft tissue masses, muscles, tendons, nerves, ligaments, and joints. The procedure is particularly useful for diagnosing a range of conditions affecting these structures, such as cystic lesions, solid tumors, abscesses, joint effusions, tendon tears, tendonitis, tenosynovitis, nerve compression, and stress fractures. During the ultrasound procedure, an acoustic coupling gel is applied to the area of the extremity being examined to facilitate the transmission of sound waves. An ultrasound probe is then placed against the skin and moved over the targeted joint or area, allowing sound waves to penetrate the tissues and reflect back to the receiving unit. These reflected sound waves are captured and converted into real-time images, which can be displayed in various orientations, including longitudinal, transverse, and oblique views. The resulting images are permanently recorded for further analysis. After the examination, a physician reviews the images and provides a written interpretation of the findings. It is important to note that CPT® Code 76882 is designated for a limited examination, which may focus on a specific joint space or a particular nonvascular extremity structure, such as the Achilles tendon or gastrocnemius muscle, or for the evaluation of a solitary soft tissue mass, cyst, or tumor. In contrast, a more comprehensive ultrasound examination of a specific joint, which includes a thorough assessment of the joint space and surrounding soft tissue structures, is coded under 76881.
