Common Language Description

The multi-leaf collimator (MLC) device is a sophisticated tool utilized in radiation therapy, specifically designed to enhance the precision of treatment delivery. Initially, MLCs replaced traditional alloy blocks that were used to shape radiation beams, allowing for more accurate targeting of tumors while simultaneously protecting adjacent healthy tissues. In the context of intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT), the MLC plays a crucial role in optimizing the delivery of radiation. The device consists of 20 to 80 movable leaves or shields that can be adjusted to block portions of the radiation beam, thereby enabling a tailored approach to treatment. To create an effective IMRT plan, clinicians rely on previously obtained imaging studies, such as plain radiographs and CT scans. These images inform the design and construction of the IMRT plan, allowing for the precise positioning of the MLC leaves. A specialized computer program analyzes the imaging data to determine the optimal configuration of the leaves, ensuring that the radiation is directed accurately to the tumor while minimizing exposure to surrounding healthy tissues. During the radiation delivery process, the MLC leaves can be repositioned dynamically in response to the arc rotation of the radiation beam, facilitating the IMRT technique. This adaptability is essential for maintaining treatment efficacy as the tumor may change in size over time, necessitating adjustments to the IMRT plan. The design and construction of the IMRT plan, as reported by CPT® Code 77338, encompasses the entire process of configuring the MLC device for each specific treatment plan, ensuring that the radiation therapy is delivered with the highest level of precision and effectiveness.
