Common Language Description

The CPT® Code 80160 refers to a laboratory test specifically designed to measure the levels of desipramine in the blood. Desipramine, which is also known by its brand name Norpramin, belongs to a class of medications called tricyclic antidepressants. These medications are primarily utilized in the treatment of various mental health conditions, including depression and anxiety or panic disorders. Additionally, desipramine is prescribed for managing neuropathic pain, attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), bulimia, and persistent hives of unknown origin. The process of obtaining a blood sample for this test involves a procedure known as venipuncture, which is separately reportable. Once the blood sample is collected, the serum is analyzed using a sophisticated technique called liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry, which allows for precise measurement of the drug levels in the bloodstream. This test is crucial for monitoring therapeutic levels of desipramine, ensuring that patients receive the appropriate dosage for effective treatment while minimizing potential side effects.
