The CPT® Code 80325 refers to a laboratory test specifically designed to measure the presence of amphetamines in various biological specimens, including serum, urine, saliva, hair, and stool. Amphetamines are a class of central nervous system stimulants that are primarily utilized in the treatment of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and narcolepsy. This code encompasses the testing for three or four different types of amphetamines, which may include both prescription medications and illicit substances. Notably, the category of amphetamines also includes designer drugs such as methylenedioxyamphetamine (MDA), methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA, commonly known as Ecstasy), and methylenedioxyethylamphetamine (MDEA, referred to as Eve), which possess both stimulant and hallucinogenic properties. Due to their potential for addiction and high rates of abuse, the measurement of amphetamines is critical in various clinical and forensic settings. The detection windows for these substances vary by specimen type: they can be identified in blood or serum for up to 12 hours post-ingestion, in urine for 2 to 5 days, in saliva for 1 to 5 days, and in hair for as long as 90 days. The testing methodologies employed include high-performance liquid chromatography coupled with tandem mass spectrometry for serum, urine, and stool samples, while hair samples are analyzed using gas chromatography/mass spectrometry. Saliva testing is conducted through a rapid immunochromatographic assay. It is important to note that CPT® Code 80324 is designated for testing one or two amphetamines, while CPT® Code 80326 is applicable for testing five or more amphetamines.
