Common Language Description

The CPT® Code 80340 refers to a laboratory test specifically designed to measure the levels of antiepileptic drugs that are not otherwise specified. Antiepileptics are a class of medications primarily utilized in the management of seizure disorders, which are neurological conditions characterized by abnormal electrical activity in the brain. In addition to their primary use in treating seizures, these medications may also be prescribed for patients suffering from chronic pain conditions, such as migraines or fibromyalgia. The pharmacological action of antiepileptics can vary significantly among different drugs within this category; however, they generally work by altering the activity of various brain chemicals. This includes modulation of sodium channels, GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid) receptors, NMDA (N-methyl-D-aspartate) receptors, calcium channels, AMPA (alpha-amino-3-hydroxy-5-methyl-4-isoxazolepropionic acid) receptors, and potassium channels. By influencing these pathways, antiepileptics help to reduce the frequency of abnormal electrical discharges in the brain, which can lead to seizures or pain sensations. The primary analytical methods employed for testing the presence and levels of these drugs in biological samples, such as urine, serum, or plasma, include high-performance liquid chromatography, gas chromatography, liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry, and immunoassays. It is important to note that CPT® Code 80339 is applicable when testing for 1-3 antiepileptic drugs, while CPT® Code 80341 is designated for evaluations involving 7 or more antiepileptic compounds.
