Common Language Description

The CPT® Code 80347 refers to a laboratory test specifically designed to measure the presence of 13 or more benzodiazepines in biological specimens such as stool, urine, serum, or plasma. Benzodiazepines are a class of psychoactive drugs that possess various therapeutic effects, including sedative, hypnotic, anxiolytic, anti-convulsant, and muscle relaxant properties. These medications are commonly prescribed for a range of conditions, including anxiety disorders, panic attacks, insomnia, alcohol withdrawal symptoms, and seizure management. Additionally, they may be utilized in preoperative or intra-operative settings to provide anesthesia. Examples of commonly prescribed benzodiazepines include chlordiazepoxide (Librium), diazepam (Valium), flurazepam (Dalmane), lorazepam (Ativan), temazepam (Restoril), clonazepam (Klonopin), flunitrazepam (Rohypnol), alprazolam (Xanax), triazolam (Halcion), and midazolam (Versed), each serving specific therapeutic purposes. The testing process involves obtaining a blood sample through venipuncture, collecting urine via random void or catheterization, and gathering meconium stool from a diaper. The analysis of serum, plasma, and meconium is conducted using quantitative liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry, while urine samples are analyzed using quantitative high-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. It is important to note that CPT® Code 80346 is applicable for testing 1-12 benzodiazepines, whereas CPT® Code 80347 is specifically designated for the identification of 13 or more benzodiazepines.
