Common Language Description

The CPT® Code 82000 refers to a laboratory test specifically designed to measure the levels of acetaldehyde in the blood. Acetaldehyde is an organic chemical compound that occurs naturally in various foods such as coffee, bread, and ripe fruits. It can also be intentionally added to food products as a flavoring agent or preservative, and is utilized as a solvent in various manufacturing processes. In the human body, acetaldehyde is primarily produced as a byproduct of alcohol (ethanol) metabolism. When alcohol is consumed, the enzyme alcohol dehydrogenase facilitates the conversion of ethanol into acetaldehyde within the liver. Subsequently, acetaldehyde is metabolized by the enzyme acetaldehyde dehydrogenase, along with cysteine-containing glutathione, to produce acetate. This acetate is then further broken down into water and carbon dioxide, which are eliminated from the body through urine and respiration. Monitoring acetaldehyde levels is crucial due to its potential adverse effects, which may include cardiovascular issues such as atherosclerosis, ischemia, heart failure, hematologic coagulation disorders, and hepatic injury or failure. The test requires a blood sample, which is obtained through a separately reportable venipuncture, and the analysis is conducted using headspace gas chromatography to ensure accurate measurement of acetaldehyde concentrations in the bloodstream.
