Adenosine, 5-monophosphate, cyclic (cyclic AMP) is a critical nucleotide involved in various cellular processes, particularly in intracellular signaling. The measurement of cyclic AMP levels in blood or urine is essential for diagnosing certain medical conditions. The enzyme adenylate cyclase synthesizes cyclic AMP from ATP, and its production is regulated by hormones such as adrenaline and glucagon. The testing for cyclic AMP is primarily utilized in the differential diagnosis of hypercalcemia, a condition characterized by elevated calcium levels in the blood, and it may also serve as an adjunctive test for assessing parathyroid hormone resistance. To perform this test, a blood sample is collected through venipuncture, which is a separately reportable procedure. The collected plasma is then frozen and analyzed using radioimmunoassay techniques. Additionally, urine samples can be collected either as a 24-hour specimen preserved with 10 ml of 6M hydrochloric acid or as an unpreserved random sample, with a minimum volume of 5 ml. 1. Indications

The measurement of Adenosine, 5-monophosphate, cyclic (cyclic AMP) levels is indicated for specific clinical scenarios, particularly in the evaluation of certain metabolic and endocrine disorders.

  • Hypercalcemia This test is most often utilized as a differential diagnostic tool for hypercalcemia, which is characterized by elevated calcium levels in the blood and can indicate various underlying health issues.
  • Parathyroid Resistance Cyclic AMP testing may also serve as an adjunctive test for assessing parathyroid hormone resistance, helping to evaluate the functionality of the parathyroid glands and their response to hormonal signals.

2. Procedure

The procedure for measuring cyclic AMP levels involves several key steps to ensure accurate results.

  • Sample Collection A blood sample is obtained through venipuncture, which is a procedure where a needle is inserted into a vein to draw blood. This step is crucial as it provides the plasma needed for testing. The blood sample must be handled carefully to maintain its integrity.
  • Plasma Preparation Once the blood sample is collected, the plasma is separated and then frozen. This freezing process is essential to preserve the sample until it can be analyzed, as it prevents degradation of the cyclic AMP present in the plasma.

3. Post-Procedure
