This accumulation is considered one of the earliest changes in the brain, potentially occurring up to 20 years prior to the manifestation of clinical symptoms associated with cognitive decline. The presence of these plaques is linked to neuronal death and synaptic loss, which ultimately leads to cognitive impairment and dementia.
