Common Language Description

The CPT® Code 82233 refers to the measurement of beta-amyloid 1-40 (Abeta 40), a peptide that plays a significant role in the pathology of Alzheimer's disease. Beta-amyloid is a protein fragment that accumulates abnormally in the brains of individuals with Alzheimer's, forming plaques that disrupt neuronal function. This accumulation is considered one of the earliest changes in the brain, potentially occurring up to 20 years prior to the manifestation of clinical symptoms associated with cognitive decline. The presence of these plaques is linked to neuronal death and synaptic loss, which ultimately leads to cognitive impairment and dementia. The testing of Abeta 40 levels, alongside Abeta 42 levels (CPT® Code 82234), serves as a biomarker assessment for patients exhibiting cognitive impairment. This testing is crucial for the early diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease, allowing healthcare providers to differentiate it from other cognitive disorders or normal aging processes. Furthermore, it aids in the timely initiation of treatment strategies. Commercially available blood biomarker tests, as well as cerebrospinal fluid analysis, can be utilized to evaluate beta-amyloid levels. An elevated level of beta-amyloid 1-40 is strongly associated with Alzheimer's disease, while a decrease in the normal ratio of beta-amyloid 42 to 40 (specifically below 0.073) serves as a significant early indicator of the disease, often detectable before the onset of dementia symptoms.
