The CPT® Code 82482 refers to the measurement of cholinesterase levels specifically in red blood cells (RBC). Cholinesterase is an important enzyme that plays a critical role in the functioning of the nervous system. It is composed of two main types: acetylcholinesterase and pseudocholinesterase. This blood test is essential for assessing the activity of these enzymes, which can provide valuable information regarding a patient's exposure to certain chemicals, particularly organic phosphates commonly found in pesticides. Additionally, the test is crucial for identifying individuals with an inherited deficiency of pseudocholinesterase, a condition that can lead to prolonged paralysis when succinylcholine, a muscle relaxant used during surgical procedures, is administered. In some cases, this test may also assist in diagnosing liver disease. The procedure involves obtaining a blood sample through venipuncture, which is reported separately, and the analysis of either serum or red blood cells is conducted using qualitative enzymatic methodology to determine the cholinesterase activity levels.
