The CPT® Code 85651 refers to the non-automated erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) test, which is a laboratory procedure used to measure the rate at which red blood cells (erythrocytes) settle in a vertical column of blood over a specified period, typically one hour. This test is commonly known as the Westergren ESR. The ESR is a non-specific indicator of inflammation in the body and is utilized to help identify various conditions associated with both acute and chronic inflammatory processes, including infections, cancers, and autoimmune diseases. It is important to note that while the ESR can indicate the presence of inflammation, it does not provide a definitive diagnosis; rather, it is often used in conjunction with other diagnostic tests that can more accurately pinpoint the underlying cause of the inflammation. During the procedure, a blood sample is collected, treated with an anticoagulant to prevent clotting, and then placed in a tall, thin tube. The distance that the erythrocytes fall within the tube is measured after one hour, providing a quantitative result that reflects the level of inflammation in the body. In contrast, CPT® Code 85652 describes the automated version of this test, where the blood sample is processed through an automated system that provides a sedimentation rate reading after the necessary time has elapsed.
