Common Language Description

The CPT® Code 89250 refers to the culture of oocyte(s) or embryo(s) that occurs within a timeframe of less than four days. This procedure is typically performed following a separately reportable retrieval of ova, which can be accomplished through laparoscopic or other techniques. During this process, the oocytes, which are the female reproductive cells, or embryos, which are fertilized oocytes, are carefully identified and isolated. Once isolated, they are placed in a culture medium and incubated under meticulously controlled conditions to ensure their viability and functionality prior to implantation into the uterus. If the retrieved oocytes are not fully mature, they are placed in the culture medium to allow for maturation. Conversely, if the oocytes are determined to be mature, they undergo fertilization in a separately reportable insemination procedure. Following fertilization, the resulting embryos are monitored for a period of less than four days as they develop. The standard culturing techniques utilized in this procedure are specifically outlined under CPT® Code 89250. It is important to note that there is a related procedure, CPT® Code 89251, which involves co-culturing techniques. Co-culture refers to the process of culturing oocytes or embryos alongside oviductal, uterine, granulosa, or other substrate cells. This technique requires the isolation and examination of substrate cells, which are then plated and co-cultured with the oocytes or embryos. Co-culture techniques are generally employed when 10 or more oocytes are harvested, while the typical patient undergoing this procedure has eight or fewer mature oocytes available for microfertilization. Additional work, including co-culture, is necessitated when more than 10 mature oocytes are present.
