CPT® Code 89330

The CPT® Code 89330 refers to a sperm evaluation specifically known as the cervical mucus penetration test. This test is also commonly referred to as the post-coital test, Huhner test, or Sims-Huhner test. The primary purpose of this evaluation is to assess the interaction between a woman's cervical mucus and her partner's sperm during the ovulation period. To ensure accurate results, it is essential that sexual intercourse is avoided for at least two days prior to ovulation. After conducting other separately reportable tests to determine the onset of ovulation, the couple engages in intercourse and subsequently visits the physician's office approximately 6 to 10 hours later. During the examination, a small sample of mucus is aspirated from the endocervix, which is then analyzed under a microscope. An additional component of this evaluation may include the spinnbarkeit test, which assesses the consistency of the cervical mucus. Ideally, the mucus should exhibit a thin and elastic quality. The evaluation also involves counting the number of sperm present within the mucus sample and assessing their forward motility, which is crucial for understanding fertility potential.
