Common Language Description

A nasopharyngoscopy is a diagnostic procedure that involves the use of an endoscope to visualize the nasopharynx, which is the area located at the back of the nose and above the throat. This procedure is classified as a separate procedure, meaning it is performed independently and not as part of a more extensive surgical operation. The primary purpose of nasopharyngoscopy is to evaluate the velopharyngeal function, which is crucial for proper speech production and swallowing. Additionally, it helps in identifying potential causes of eustachian tube dysfunction, which can lead to various ear-related issues, including hearing loss and chronic ear infections. During the procedure, the endoscope is carefully inserted through the nostril into the nasal cavity and advanced into the nasopharynx. As the endoscope moves through these structures, the physician can visualize the nasal anatomy and nasopharynx on a monitor, allowing for the identification of any abnormalities such as inflammation, tumors, or structural issues. To further assess nasopharyngeal function, the patient may be asked to perform specific speech tasks while the endoscope is in place, providing valuable information about their speech mechanics and any potential dysfunctions.
