Common Language Description

The CPT® Code 93151 refers to the process of interrogation and programming of an implanted phrenic nerve stimulator system, specifically focusing on the adjustment of at least one parameter. This procedure is primarily utilized for patients who have undergone implantation of the phrenic nerve stimulator to treat central sleep apnea. The interrogation process involves assessing the device's performance and functionality, which includes evaluating the pulse generator in various sleeping positions—supine, left side, and right side. This assessment is crucial for determining the optimal settings for stimulation rate, pulse amplitude, duration, timing of stimulation, and impedance. During this procedure, healthcare professionals also check the battery status and the functionality of the electrodes, as well as measure output, cycling, and impedance. Patient compliance is another important factor that is evaluated. The patient's feedback regarding their experience with the device settings is gathered to ensure that the adjustments made align with their personal perceptions of efficacy. The data collected from the device is then used to configure the stimulation and pacing settings appropriately. In the context of CPT® Code 93151, at least one parameter must be modified or adjusted to enhance the therapeutic outcomes for the patient. This is distinct from CPT® Code 93153, which involves interrogation without any reprogramming or adjustments. Following the interrogation and programming, the results are communicated to the patient, including discussions about the necessity for any further adjustments and the importance of ongoing monitoring to ensure continued effectiveness of the treatment.
