Common Language Description

The CPT® Code 93227 refers to the process of external electrocardiographic recording that lasts up to 48 hours, utilizing continuous rhythm recording and storage. This procedure is designed to monitor the electrical activity of the heart over an extended period while the patient engages in their normal daily activities. The patient wears an external ECG recording device, commonly known as a Holter monitor, which consists of electrodes or leads affixed to the chest. These electrodes capture the heart's electrical signals, allowing for a comprehensive assessment of heart rhythm and rate. The device continuously records the ECG waveforms for a duration ranging from 12 to 48 hours, storing the data on magnetic tape or a digitized medium for subsequent analysis. Upon completion of the monitoring period, the patient returns the device to the healthcare provider's office. The stored data includes critical information such as heart rhythm, heart rate, ST segment analysis, heart rate variability, and T-wave alternans. A visual superimposition scanning technique is employed to create a 'page review' of the entire recording, which helps in identifying various ECG waveforms and provides selective samples of rhythm strips. Following this analysis, a detailed report is generated, which is then reviewed and interpreted by a physician or another qualified healthcare professional to identify any potential heart arrhythmias. It is important to note that while CPT® Code 93227 specifically covers the review and interpretation of the recorded data, other related codes exist for the complete procedure, recording, and analysis components.
